Derrick Rose Signs 5-Year Contract Extension With Chicago Bulls

Chicago Bulls superstar Derrick Rose will be staying the the Windy City for sometime into the future, after signing a maximum contract extension this week, keeping him on the team for the next five years. According to NBA.com, the reigning MVP agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Chicago Bulls, worth approximately $94 million. The extension will start in the 2012-13 season, when Rose is eligible to make about $16 million. And, his teammates say it was well-earned. "We're all very excited for him," Carlos Boozer said. "He deserves it. He puts in a lot of effort. I wish the contract was for 10 years." Born and raised in Chicago, Rose is a hometown hero and face of the future for the franchise. After being selected with the #1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, he went from Rookie of the Year to All-Star to MVP in his first three seasons, becoming the youngest player to win that award. So far, the only thing Rose doesn't have is a championship ring, but it doesn't seem that far away. In the 2010-11 NBA season, he led the Bulls to a league-leading record of 62–20, Chicago's best since the championship era with Jordan and Scottie Pippen. He then carried them through the Playoffs to the Eastern Conference Finals. But, they were defeated by LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh and the Miami Heat in five tough games. Following an announcement of the deal on Wednesday (December 21), with his family and friends looking on, Rose expressed his excitement but made it clear, winning is the most important to him. "I never would have thought in a million years I'd sign a contract like this," Rose said at the news conference. "No one from Englewood's ever been in my position, so sometimes I think, why me? "I'll be able to afford what I want. But not too many things excite me, except winning and being around my family." The deal expires when Rose is 29 years old, and even then, he hopes he can remain with the Bulls throughout his entire NBA career. "I think I can finally say this now: Mom, we finally made it," Rose exclaimed.
