Mayweather, Pacquiao Talk On Phone -- Fighters Can't Agree On Split

By now, everyone's tired of hearing about a possible super-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. The only thing fans are waiting for is the official announcement ... but here's the latest. After over two years of not taking a fight against Pacquiao, "Money" Mayweather has come out in recent months, saying he's ready to fight Pac-Man ... and wants it on May 5th (a date he's been talking about since late last year) before he has to begin serving an 87-day jail sentence starting June 1st. After calling out Pacquiao on Twitter, he began calling Michael Koncz, Pacquiao’s adviser. Then last week, Koncz handed the phone to Pacquiao, and the two boxers finally had a private conversation. Mayweather tells ESPN.com, via email, that he and the Filipino boxing star talked about the fight, but said he wouldn't give him a 50/50 split, as Pacquiao's camp has requested ... so, that's what's currently standing in the way of what would be the biggest fight in the sport's history. "He ask about a 50/50 split and I told him no that can't happen, but what can happen is you can make more money fighting me then you have made in your career," Mayweather wrote in the email. Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum fumed at the offer, saying Mayweather is impossible to negotiate with, and that his fighter deserves more. "Mayweather and his people are completely irrational," Arum said Friday. "Pacquiao has the highest gates, highest pay-per-view numbers, brings in more high rollers to Vegas, and he is supposed to take less than 50%? Never." Arum also added that, in addition to compensation, Mayweather's May 5th fight demand is also another reason why it won't happen. "May 5 is impossible," he said. 'We couldn't get the right cable arrangements by then, or complete the outdoor stadium we are building with a temporary seating capacity of around 45,000. We would lose 30 to 40 million dollars of revenue, and that's crazy." Arum and Pac-Man want May 26 or June 9. However, Mayweather is due to begin serving jail time June 1st, but Arum is confident that Mayweather’s legal team could make a successful plea for a short delay in his reporting date ... if he really wants the fight. Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach believes Mayweather doesn't want to fight him at all. He says that no matter what Mayweather says in the public, he'll find a way to make it impossible to come to an agreement. "It was typical," Roach said. "We've been chasing him for two years. All of a sudden he gets his get-out-of-jail-free card and wants to call the shots. Tweeting people and promoting fights through Twitter is very common now, trash-talking through Twitter. I found it kind of humorous. But just because you call someone out, there's still a lot of negotiating to do. At least he called us out, though. I'd like Manny to call him out too. Since Mayweather has been so bold, I hope Manny is just as bold back. "This is good news that he called Manny out. Both guys want to fight each other, and we need to get this done, now or never." Roach told ESPN.com that working out the details for the bout for May will be hard, regardless, but hopes the mega fight will take place in November 2012. "It's ridiculous that two grown men can't do business together. It's like they both want to take their ball and go home. They just need to drop the issues they have with each other and negotiate." In the meantime, Team Pacquiao is looking into other options for June ... if Mayweather doesn't come to fruition. The short list includes Timothy Bradley, Miguel Cotto, Lamont Peterson and a rematch with Marquez. One report said that Timothy Bradley and Miguel Cotto were the front runners. Stay tuned...
