Two T-Hawk drones that were acquired by the Miami-Dade Police Department in 2010 look like they may never be used, and for now this is a sign of relief for the public and for Florida legislators. Even though they have been cleared by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), it is almost impossible for MDPD to be able to make use of them.
FAA rules state that they can only be used under the conditions of being able to only fly it below 300 feet, outside city limits, during the day and within sight of the operator. The only possible scenario where MDPD would be able to use under these strict conditions would be if there was an armed suspect inside a rural building.With the help of the drones, MDPD would be able to keep an eye on the suspect and not run the risk of someone else being shot.
Senator Joe Negron is behind the bill that would ban police from gathering “evidence or other information” with unmanned aircraft and if there was any info gathered, it would be inadmissible in court. Its almost unreal that MDPD even has drones that could watch the moves of people in the first place.
