Apple announced Monday (January 7) that they've hit and surpassed 40 billion apps downloaded from its App Store since launching in July 2008. Additionally, the tech giant has paid out more than $7 billion to developers.
Those are huge numbers, but still just a fraction of Apple's revenue. By comparison, the company reported $36 billion in revenues in the fourth quarter of 2012.
In March 2012, Apple had paid out $4 billion to developers when it announced it had hit 25 billion downloads. In July 2011, it was at $2.5 billion.
According to the Wall Street Journal, two game companies, Backflip Studios and Supercell, brought in more than $100 million. Telltale Games, the company behind The Walking Dead series, also saw sales exceeding tens of millions, according to an earlier report in The WSJ.
And, just 25 developers accounted for 50% of app revenue in the U.S. Apple's App Store (for iPhone only) and Google Play during the first 20 days of November 2012, according to a recent report by Canalys, an analytics firm.
