The NFL has decided to uphold the four-game suspension of Patriots QB Tom Brady, for his role in the "DeflateGate" scandal.
Commissioner Roger Goodell made the announcement on Tuesday (July 28).
According to ESPN, he cited new evidence, which revealed that on or shortly before March 6 -- the day Brady was interviewed by Ted Wells and his investigative team -- Brady instructed his assistant to destroy the cellphone he had been using since early November 2014, which included the AFC title game against the Colts and the initial weeks of the subsequent investigation.
In Tuesday's statement, the NFL said Brady destroyed the phone, even though investigators requested access to text messages and other electronic information that had been stored on the phone.
Furthermore, Brady was said to have sent and received nearly 10,000 text messages during the period, which can't be retrieved now.
In his appeal hearing Brady said he normally destroys his cellphone and SIM cards when he gets a new cellphone.
Brady will miss the first four games this season unless the case goes to court for further appeal. Jimmy Garoppolo, a second-round draft pick in 2014, would replace Brady.
