It was team captain Dustin Brown who snatched the Stanley Cup from the hands of Commissioner Gary Bettman and hoisted it into the air in front of hometown fans ... who went nuts!!
"They've been waiting longer than I have, this city," Brown said. "You dream of winning the Cup, and you know what, I'm glad I was the first King to ever lift it."
The victory caps one of the most remarkable postseason runs in NHL history. Los Angeles was in 11th place in the Western Conference with 14 games remaining in the regular season, and barely made the actually Playoffs. But, when the team officially made it, they went on a tear. The Kings went 16-4, and eliminated the top three seeds in the Western Conference and matched the second-fastest run to a title in modern NHL history.
In the Finals, the Kings quickly took a 3-0 series lead, but then lost two potential clinching games last week. On Monday evening, they finally finished off the New Jersey Devils at Staples Center in front of adoring fans although NJ appeared to have a chance for one of the biggest comebacks in finals history.
Reports say that the Kings' victory is the first Stanley Cup win on their home ice since the Anaheim Ducks did it five years ago.
They're also just the second #8 seed ever to make the Finals, and first to actually win. Edmonton lost in seven games in 2006.
