It took less than an hour for the world’s No. 1 ranked tennis player Serena Williams to beat No. 12 Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain to win her eighth Miami Open on Saturday. Williams won the last 10 games in the 56-minute match, and aced on 20 of the 21 first serves she landed to win 6-2, 6-0.
“I improvised today,” she said (via ESPN) after the match. “I took some pace off to get my first serve in and it worked for me, because I haven’t been serving in this tournament the way I would like to. Improvising was healthy.”
And effective. Williams’s win Saturday ensures that she’ll remain at the top of WTA’s ranking for at least 116 weeks, the third-longest run ever, BBC reports.
Williams also became one of just four women to win the same WTA tournament eight times or more. Chris Evert did it at Hilton Head, Steffi Graf recorded eight wins in the German Open, and Martina Navratilova won eight times or mare at a whopping seven different events.
Williams has now racked up 702 WTA wins, but she probably won’t celebrate with a cake on Saturday. She already did that Wednesday when she won her 700th match, and, oh, what a cake it was.
“Wow 700 wins! I still can’t believe it. Thanks for all the love and support,” Williams captured the Instagram photo she posted after winning her Miami Open quarterfinal match, 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-3, against Sabine Lisicki.
