Canelo Alvarez Knocks Out Liam Smith in 9th Round :::: #Sports

Canelo Alvarez earned his sixth straight victory on Saturday night (Sept. 17), when he knocked out Liam Smith to win the WBO middleweight title.

Smith was handed the first loss of career in front of more than 50,000 fans at AT&T Stadium in Texas.

Canelo knocked down Smith three times during the fight, the final time coming from a left hook to the body to finish him in the ninth round.

"I told you I was going to give you a great fight and bring you the championship, and here it is," Alvarez told the crowd after the win. "I started controlling him, but in the second round I hurt my hand. I hurt my right hand, so I had to use my left more often. I only used sparingly my right hand, but that's what happened."

It was Smith's third title defense. Alvarez proved to be bigger, faster and more powerful than the English fighter.

"He was a too good and skillful today, and I was too slow," said Smith. "I did hit him with some jabs and right hands, but to be more competitive I needed better timing, and my timing was off. I think maybe if I waited a little longer and gotten more experience I would have been able to fight a guy like that better. I am very disappointed."

Alvarez improved to 48-1-1 (34 KOs), while Smith's record fell to 23-1-1 (13 KOs).

With another win under his belt, talk of a megafight with Gennady Golovkin already started. And despite Canelo saying he wants to fight GGG, there's no clear indication that the two will meet next.
