An arrest warrant has been issued for former NFL player Andre Rison, after a judge found that he violated his probation in a child support case.
The 49-year-old tells the Detroit Free Press that he will turn himself in, while explaining that he's a good father and his legal troubles are a "big nasty hurdle."
"I'm just tired. Here I am, being looked at like a hardcore criminal. ... I'm trying to do the right thing," Rison told the newspaper. "My mistake was made years ago, and I'm still under this microscope. It's very frustrating."
A federal judge signed the warrant on Tuesday (Aug. 9), after Rison tested positive for marijuana and failed to keep up with minimum support payments.
Rison, however, explains that he uses marijuana edibles to deal with post-NFL injuries. "I hurt every day," he said.
During his career, Rison played for seven NFL teams from 1989 to 2000. And lately, has been a high school coach in Flint and Ann Arbor.
In 2013, he was ordered to pay at least $1,000 a month toward a total of $300,000 in restitution.
Although Rison made, at least, $19 million over the course of his career, he eventually filed bankruptcy, due to reckless spending during his playing days. In 1995, Rison signed a five-year, $17 million contract with the Cleveland Browns, which was then the most lucrative ever for a wide receiver.
Rison tells the paper he makes just $9,000 per year as an assistant coach and collects $3,300 per month in disability benefits from the NFL.
