These days, Kanye West is the biggest artist in the world, able to do whatever he wants and demand the attention he's after. However, at one point in his career, this wasn't the case.
In Jensen Karp's new book, Kanye West Owes Me $300, the former rapper (previously known as Hot Karl) shared some stories of pre-superstar Kanye in an excerpt of the book, shared by Vulture.
What stood out was how Ye played him and a room full of producers and A&Rs an early version of 2004 smash hit, "Jesus Walks"... but most of them weren't feeling it.
"As the song played, Kanye acted out and mouthed his lyrics, something he always did while his own music played, and I assume still does," Karp wrote. "He acted as if a music video was always being filmed around him, displaying yet another example of the unaware enthusiasm (and egotism) that would make him the butt of almost every joke at Baseline."
Karp says that while some gave Kanye positive feedback, most laughed at him when he left the room. "A few people even mocked him, mimicking his rap voice and making fun of his over-the-top zeal," he wrote. "One major producer in the room even asked his assistant to make sure Kanye never performed like that again".
Kanye later won a Grammy for Best Rap Song in 2005, but not everyone saw the vision he did for the song... or his career for that matter.
