The Google Cultural Institute worked to pr
eserve the world's greatest works of art via super-high-resolution gigapixel images on its website for its first five years in existence.
Within that time, it has archived around 200 works, due to its slow process. However, thanks to its new Art Camera, the project has scanned 1,000 additional images in just the past few months alone.
The camera allows museums to easily digitize their collections for preservation. So far, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Netherlands was among the first to use the Art Camera to digitize a series of artworks, including the Portrait of Armand Roulin by Van Gogh.
