Serena Williams continued her run for a Grand Slam on Tuesday night (September 8), by defeating her sister Venus at the U.S. Open in New York City.
The sisters went the max three-set distance in an exciting and emotional match-up.
With the victory, Serena is two matches away from making history -- and joining Maureen Connolly, Margaret Court and Steffi Graf as the only women to win all four major singles titles in a season.
If she can defeat Roberta Vinci in Thursday night's (September 10) US Open semifinals, she'll play for the calendar-year Grand Slam this weekend.
"It's a really great moment," Serena said in her on-court interview. "She's the toughest player I ever played in my life, and the best person I know. So it's going against your best friend and going against, for me, the greatest competitor in women's tennis."
"I think she is the best ever because of the level of competition that she's faced. There have been some unbelievable players in the past," added sister Venus. "I have played the best from different eras, as well. I have seen the level of competitiveness go up, and I have seen players who are ranked 100 who didn't believe they could win a match against you to this point fight you tooth and nail and try to take you down."
