Lawrence PhillipsFormer NFL running back Lawrence Phillips has been charged with first-degree murder in the strangling death of his cellmate, says reports.
If convicted, the 40-year-old could be sentenced to an additional term of 25 years to life.
He's due in court of his arraignment on September 15.
Phillips was sent to prison in 2008 with a term of 31 years, after being convicted of twice choking his girlfriend in 2005 in San Diego and in 2006, as well as false imprisonment and vehicle theft charges.
Back in April, he was named as a suspect in the killing of 37-year-old Damion Soward, a inmate serviced 82 years to life for murder. A coroner later ruled his death a homicide by strangulation.

Phillips played for three NFL teams over four years in the 1990s, ending his career with San Francisco in 1999.
