Legendary NYC recording studio D&D Studios, owned by DJ Premier, closed its doors this week... for good.
The producer made the announcement on Instagram, posting a photo of fellow rap legend Showbiz packing up boxes. "Showbiz packin up," the caption reads. "He's the one that brought me to D & D to lay scratches for Lord Finesse on a REMIX called 'Return Of The Funky Man'. Eddie Sancho did the mix and I never left from that day. Located on 37th Street in New York City's Garment District, D&D Studios is being closed down to make room for luxury apartments in the building it was housed in.
Premier purchased the studio in 2002, following the death of its former owner HeadQCourterz, but has worked there since the early '90s. Over the years, a number of rap stars have worked at the legendary studio, including Jay Z, Big Pun, Snoop Dogg, Big L, Slaughterhouse and Dilated Peoples, among others. Premier also recorded a majority of his work with Guru, as GangStarr, at the location.
Albums such as Nas' Illmatic and The Notorious B.I.G.'s Ready To Die were also recorded there.
