With weeks and months of build up, David Beckham makes it official and announces that he is going to bring Major League Soccer back to Miami. The first attempt was the Miami Fusion, which existed from 1998 till 2001 before shuttering.
Earlier today at a press conference at the brand new PAMM, Beckham with a group of investors announced that he will not only bring a professional soccer team back to Miami, but that there will be a Downtown Miami stadium funded entirely (or mostly) by private funds. Beckham exercised an option that he had in his original MLS contract that stated that he had a $25 million option to start a new team when he retired.
“This is an exciting time … for myself, exciting time for my family and friends and partners, and something we are really looking forward to bringing to Miami,” Beckham added, to chants of “We’re going to MLS,” from a group of fans calling themselves the “Southern Legion.”
Miami-Dade county mayor Carlos Gimenez, said that negotiations for Beckham’s proposed stadium started last week. The plans are to possibly lease land for a 25,000 seat stadium. As of now, there are five possible sites, including a piece of land at the Port Of Miami that will facilitate the project perfectly.
Very exciting stuff, but let’s hope they’ve done their market research and don’t have another “Miami Marlins” and “Marlins Ballpark” fiasco.
