In recent weeks, a topic of discussions has been the prospect of allowing medical marijuana use in the NFL.
Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll weighed in on the topic
Monday (Jan. 27), saying he believes it should definitely be explored.
"We have to continue to explore and compete to find ways that are
going to make our game a better game and take care of our players in the
best way possible," he said."The fact that it's in the world of
medicine is obviously something [that Commissioner Roger Goodell]
realizes and him making the expression that we need to follow the
information and the research absolutely I'm in support of. Regardless of
what other stigmas may be involved, I think we have to do this because
the world of medicine is trying to do the exact same thing and figure it
out and they're coming to some conclusions."
The league's collective bargaining agreement forbids the use of
marijuana. However, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Friday (Jan. 31)
that he will continue to evaluate the drug's potential as a pain
reliever balanced against possible addiction issues.
"We'll continue to follow the medicine," Goodell said at his annual
pre-Super Bowl news conference. "Our experts right now are not
indicating that we should change our policy in any way. We are not
actively considering that at this point in time. But if it goes down the
road sometime, that's something that we would never take off the
table."
He also said that he likes the current policy and quipped, "I am randomly tested, and I'm happy to say that I am clean."
