Lauryn Hill was sentenced to three months in prison on Monday (May 6) for failing to pay taxes on over $1 million in earnings.
According to TIME.com, the 37-year-old musician appeared in a New Jersey courtroom on Monday for sentencing, facing a maximum of three years of prison time, on three counts of tax evasion. A judge handed down a three month prison term, and an additional three months in home confinement.
Her attorney, Nathan Hochman, said Monday that Hill has paid $970,000 total to satisfy her state and federal liabilities.
"I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children, and I was being denied that," Hill said Monday.
As of press time, it's unclear when Hill will have to report to prison.
