The New England Patriots re-upped with All-Pro Rob Gronkowski on Friday (June 8), agreeing to a multi-year contract extension for a reported $54 million, making it the richest contract for a tight end in NFL history.
According to ESPN.com, the deal is for six years, with $18.17 million guaranteed.
The deal is rare, especially since it's just Gronkowski's third NFL season. But, it proves the Pats are well aware of his game-breaking skills.

"This is a rare deal. Thanks to Mr. Kraft and Coach Belichick," said Drew Rosenhaus, Gronkowski's agent.
Last season, Gronkowski set a league record for the tight-end position with 17 touchdown catches. He also recorded 1,327 yards, and made 90 receptions.
He had two more years left on his contract, but New England opted to add to his rookie deal and keep him a Patriot through the 2019 season.
Gronkowski was selected in the second round of the 2010 draft. He's currently just 23 years old.
