'Madagascar 3' Tops Big Weekend At Theaters :::: In the Movies

Madagascar 3
Hollywood had a huge weekend at the box office. The latest Madagascar flick and the alien thriller Prometheus both topped $50 million domestically, helping revenues soar after three weekends of declines.
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted led all films with a $60.4 million debut, beating out a big opening for Ridley Scott's alien saga Prometheus, which lands at #2 with $50 million. The DreamWorks Animation, "Madagascar 3", reunited voice stars Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and David Schwimmer as the zoo animals continue their travels by joining a circus.

The third installment of the series outdid the 2005 original, which opened with $47.2 million debut, though it came in behind the $63.1 million opening of the first sequel, 2008's Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.
Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron in an offshoot of director's Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror tale Alien. It's about a team of explorers who discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.
The one-two punch of Madagascar 3 and Prometheus lifted Hollywood out of an early dip in summer-season revenue. After three-straight weekends of declining receipts, domestic business totaled $177 million, up 29 percent from the same weekend last year, when Super 8 led with $35.5 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.
In at #3 was last weekend's top movie, "Snow White and the Huntsman," taking in $23 million in its second weekend; MIB3 came in a #4 with $13.5 million; and The Avengers closed out the top 5 with $10.8 million.
The Avengers' numbers this weekend lifted its domestic total to $571.9 million. The year's top-grossing film added $7.8 million overseas, raising its international haul to $824.4 million and its worldwide revenue to just under $1.4 billion.
That's a wrap for this weekend. This upcoming week, look out for the release of Warner Bros' Rock of Ages, and the Adam Sandler/Andy Samberg comedy That's My Boy.
