Teyana Taylor Parts Ways With Star Trak/Interscope, Preps Upcoming Free EP

Singer Teyana Taylor is finally ready to move on in her music career, after sitting in limbo for more than six years at Pharrell's Star Trak label. In a recent interview with DJ Skee, the 21-year-old Harlem native revealed the departure from Star Trak/Interscope, as well as an upcoming free EP. "I officially got my release from Star Trak/Interscope. I've been signed with them for six years," Teyana said. "I was signed for six years and there's a lot of stuff that comes with the industry," she continued, adding that being under contract prevented her from releasing new material when she wanted (mixtapes, music videos, etc.). During the interview, Teyana also admitted that over the years fans were unaware of what she actually did. Due to the lack of music released, fans wondered why she was famous exactly. "They see the glory, but don't know the story," she said. "When there's not music being put out or you're not moving, they automatically blame it on you, like, you're not doing anything. What do you do, not knowing the politics of the music industry." Despite the obstacles preventing her from spreading her wings, Teyana said she left Star Trak on good terms and there's no love lost between her and Pharrell. "Everybody bowed out gracefully. There was no beef," she explained. "I love Interscope, I love Star Trak. It's always love for Pharrell; that's my big brother. Now it's time for me to go from a caterpillar to a butterfly. I had to fly away from the nest and venture out on my own."
As for her current situation, Teyana is a free agent, exploring her options before making any immediate decision on a label and/or situation. For now, she plans to drop some free music and re-connect with her fans. Her upcoming EP is set to drop February 29, led by the Wale-assisted single "Make Your Move". A second single, titled "DUI" and featuring Jadakiss, will arrive on February 14.
